The Color Guard Academy is a new offering for 2009. Though the primary focus is upon cadet airmen and non-commissioned officers, the CGA offers something for cadets in each of the four phases of the Cadet Program. During the week of instruction, attendees will gain the skills needed to function as a part of a CAP color guard in just about any situation—from posting and retrieving the colors at daily reveille and retreat ceremonies to marching as a colors element in a parade to posting the colors at a conference to even serving in a military funeral colors element. Moreover, attendees will gain the confidence and knowledge they need to form and train a color guard at their local units and to provide their communities the services of their color guard. In addition to daily classes and practice with flags and parade rifles, attendees will learn the history of the US Flag as well as the customs and courtesies surrounding it, how to set up a POW/MIA table, how to conduct a change of command or other special ceremony, and the proper courtesies and signs of respect to show honored guests, including display of a general’s (or dignitary’s) flag. Color Guard Academy students will also be given the opportunity to participate in special training exercises, such as Project “X” and the Confidence Course, aiding in their development as leaders. Of course, attendees will also participate in daily uniform and dormitory inspections, as well as physical fitness training. As befitting this very special second-year program, attendees are expected to excel in drill, personal appearance, bearing and motivation.
